In 2016, a 5-day trip was planned to 10 high schools within the Navajo reservation promoting STEM education with Rhondale Tso, Marek Szczepańczyk, and myself (the first female president of the Society of Physics Students at ERAU and the current top undergraduate in the Space Physics program), and were all involved directly in the measurement of the gravitational wave emitted from the binary black hole merger. I talked with the students on the various scholarships available to minorities, such as the Gates Millennium Scholarship, the American Physical Society (APS) Minority Scholarship, and the National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experience for Undergraduates (REUs). We also brought a mock interferometer, donated directly from the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) for this outreach surrounded by various smaller astrophysical displays to supplement the push toward research experiences available at an undergraduate level.
