Famous Software Bug -- Bad Numerical Computing

The numerical computing error was in the conversion of a 64 bit floating point number to a 16 bit integer.  The 64 bit number was drastically larger than the 16 bit integer could represent,   This number was in the inerial referance system which is used bu the guidance system.  The destruction took place on Jun 4, 1996. This bug destroyed the rocket and its cargo which were evaluated at 500 million dollars.  With today's inflation that would be equivalent to approximately 577 million dollars.
